Behind the design
We made the notebook we couldn't find.
It started with a frustration: we couldn't find a notebook we wanted to use every day.
We'd tried dozens. Notebooks with great paper came in covers that felt disposable or generic. Refillable systems added the bulk of metal hardware and thick inner sleeves we didn't need. And beautiful, bound journals didn't lay flat and felt so permanent they became too precious to use freely.
We wanted one that didn't ask us to choose. Slim enough to carry daily. Comfortable to write in without fighting the spine. Made from materials that handle real use without looking worn. Refillable, so the cover lasts for years while the pages are meant to be filled.
We couldn't find it. So we made it.
The cover is Italian Epsom leather, a heat-pressed calfskin with a fine cross-hatched grain. We chose it instead of vegetable-tanned leather because vegetable-tanned absorbs oils from your hands, darkens over time, and needs conditioning. Epsom stays slim, resists scratches, and looks the same after twelve months of daily use as it did on day one. We also kept the exterior completely clean, tucking a subtle logo only on the inside cover. We prefer a minimalist aesthetic where nothing is purely decorative.
The paper is 64 gsm Japanese-milled, thread-sewn to lay completely flat. 64 gsm instead of 80 gsm, because thinner paper means a slimmer notebook, and it still handles fountain pen ink without bleed-through. 80 pages per refill instead of 160, because a thicker notebook is a worse notebook: more bulk, more weight, a stiffer spine that fights you when you write. Keeping the notebook slim is also about carrying light. 80 pages holds what you need for the tasks at hand, so you don't have to carry around a backlog of old notes.
The refill system is a simple, reliable elastic loop. No rings, no metal hardware, no clips needed to hold the pages open. The mechanism should just disappear. And if the elastic ever wears out after years of use, you can easily thread a new one in. We also attached the bookmark ribbon to the refill, not the cover. Ribbons inevitably fray with daily use. This way, your cover isn't stuck with a frayed ribbon, and you get a fresh one every time you swap notebooks.
And to keep everything tidy inside your bag, we designed a Transit Case. It holds the notebook, your pens, and essentials in one organized place, and uses water-resistant nylon to protect against accidental spills.
We use this notebook every day, and hope you enjoy it as much as we do. If you see a detail we can improve, please write to us at write@pensift.com
